Couple of Newbie Questions ! - Guild Wars Forums

Hey Guys, i recently started Guild Wars and so far loving it. It's a great move from WoW (regret playing for a year) to GW =]]

I have a few questions regarding both pvp and pve.

1) For PVE, is it wise to start the game at Prophecies? Will my Prophecies character be able to experience all the worlds to GWEN ?

2) What is a good newb-friendly PvP class/combo? I'm HIGHLY interested in playing Mesmer for PVP but it hasn't turned out so well.

3) Aside from GW Wiki, what are some other great GW fan-sites ?

1) No matter in what game you start, you can always take your character to another campaign. You can't make an Assassin/ritualist here you need to start in Factions if you want to make them. For Paragon/Dervish you need to start in Nightfall. You will gain experience points faster in Factions/Nightfall since the quests here give much exp. compared to Prophecies.

2) I'd try Elementalist. They aren't very hard to play imo. You should just try out a few classes and see which one you prefer. Mesmer is a nice class but can be very hard to play especially if you try interrupting. You should get to know the skills and their recharge time from different professions first.

3) http://www.pvxwiki.com/wiki/Main_Page Is a nice Site, Especially for newbies since you can find builds here for every profession.

1. Prophecies is a nice start, it has a huge storyline (best imo), it has the largest learning curve, but it takes you longer to level up. Factions lets you level the fastest and I think it has the smallest learning curve. Nightfall is a nice in between.

You can take any character to any campaign as long as you have access (bought) to it.

2. I'd go with a Warrior or Ele. Maybe a Paragon. I'm not too into PVP, so you should definitely look at other answers.

3. Aside from the first (and best, imo) Wiki and the official Wiki? These forums, of course. If you can't find something from either three of these source then you've probably just made it up.

But seriously, if you can't find anything, use search, if that turns up nothing post a question here in the Q&A section.

Lets see.

1. Well best starting point imho is nf if you have that expansion. The reason for it is the heroes you get early on. Its a huge boon and it makes things much easier. Also after a certain point you can just switch between campaigns easy.

2. Ive always found that rangers are pretty newb friendly for pvp. They have decent armor and dps so its not so bad for pvp newbs. Though you can always experiment to finally find what you like best. Keep in mind though that in GW there is no such thing as a "King of pvp class". GW keeps all the classes pretty balanced for pvp so there is no such thing as a dominant class or a perfect build. One good tip for you to do is use the observer mode. Just hit the B key in any town or outpost and look around and see how peeps uses different types of classes and which are more commonly used. Also as you pvp dont forget to spend them balth points hehehe.

3. Well guildwiki and pvxwiki are two of the best aside from this site to be honest. By the time you finish with all the info youll find there and here you should have a pretty darn good idea on how to run just about any class hahaha.

i'd start wit factions or nitefall imo
jus cuz they r much more refined and nub-friendly
i.e. they added much more tutorials at teh start

i mean proph has nub-island jus as all teh other ones do,
but its still quite less directed
pre-searing is more of jus a world for low-lvls
rather than a world for new ppl learning how to play teh game

so between factions or nitefall
nf has heroes, which u mite enjoy havin

for pvp
i'd start wit a ranger or ele

rangers r a semi-low priority target
and have decent self-defense
and being at range makes it much easier

playing a warr u'll have to deal wit kiting, blocking, and bein snared

eles r fairly straight forward
jus nuke away
ur a softie though, so u'll have to learn to kite
or bring a self-defense
or jus play a blindbot

1. If you want to spend time learning the game mechanics and how skills work together, Prophecies is the way to start. Its learning curve lets you get a feel for how to play the right way, and also how to rely on your skills, not having heroes to support you. and anyway, by the time you get to Lion's Arch, you will be at least lvl 10, which means you can go to EotN and get lvl 20 heroes.

2. as said above, for just starting out, a ranger is a good choice. conditions and interrupts are great for PvP, and Expertise gives nice e-management. that and the fact that D-shot is among the best skills in the game, period, allowing you to interrupt better than a mesmer, makes it a good profession to start with. Ranger also makes use of your secondary pretty well, such as /N touchie or /W thumper.

3. the originial guildwars.wikia.com is great for learning the basics and helping you through missions and quests. Of course, you are on the best community site right now. There are many high-end players that post here, and the devs from the game come regularly to get a feel for the community. Unlike pvxwiki, a build posted here will be torn apart and tested within a day of posting, and the good ones are better, on average, than a lot on pvx. Just be sure to use the search before you post, or wear an asbestos suit.

Although i still am inclined to learn Mesmer at some stage simply because they are awesome

Just to clarify in case you were mistaken.

There are 3 chapters, Prophicies, Factions and Nightfall and one expantion GW:Eye of the North(GWEN).

If you purchased all 4 they must be linked together inorder for any char in one to move through all of them.

Lastly in order to get the most out of PvP you really need quite a few skills unlocked. One fast way of doing this is purchasing a PvP unlock pack from GW.com. If you do not wish to spend real money then you can use points you earn in PvP to unlock skills at a Priest of Balthazar, those skills are then useable on any PvP char you create.

For PvP, I think it would depend on what type you're thinking of getting into: GvG, TA, HA, AB

Starting an Ele or Ranger for most PvP's sounds good, but Ranger requires more finesse than Ele in GvG IMO.

And yes, Mesmers are awesome
